After a hearty breakfast at my favorite pancake spot (the pancakes are so light and fluffy that they practically float, accompanied by scrambled eggs and fried potatoes. Mom had corned beef hash, fried eggs, rice, and banana pancakes), I had an old tattoo on my ankle worked on. It was just a simple butterfly, incredibly blah. I wanted something like a vine with leaves snaking up behind the butterfly, but the guy convinced me to get something a little more unusual. He freehanded the background design, whatever the hell it is. I didn't want anything too tribal looking, though. Now I just have to go in again and get the actual butterfly worked on so it's not so plain looking, but more colorful and ornate. I had forgotten how painful getting my flesh carved.....err, tattooed can be (and I have a pretty high threshhold for pain!), so I pretty much went as white as a sheet as I was lying there. I mean, to the point where I'm having second thought about getting my right shoulder worked on next week :-/. I'll probably do it, since I have wanted something of a memorial to my dad for awhile now. The other picture is some Chinese writing on the inside of my ankle (Chinese for Pisces). My ex-boyfiend and I got matching tattooes, since he is a Pisces as well...*snort*! THANK GOD we never opted to have eachothers names put there!! Nope, a Pisces should never date another Pisces, especially one with raging ADHD, among other things ;-).

I really like the freehand design behind the butterfly- do you like it? OMG that breakfast looks so good!! I'm too much of a wussy to ever get a tattoo!
ReplyDeleteBreakfast looks scrumptious..and LOVE the tattoo :)
ReplyDeleteI just knew you were a cool chick, Kiva! He did a really nice design for your butterfly. I know it's painful, but tattoos are kind of addictive, aren't they? :P One of these days I'm going to have more done to mine, too! (left back/shoulder). You think you'll get some color on the butterfly? What are you getting done on your shoulder?
ReplyDelete- Grace
Ok I always seem to get the most eerily appropriate captchas when I post on your blog - this time it was "egodad" (you know, cuz you were talking about your dad and all.) Weird, huh? Just thought you'd want to know, lol.

wow nice job on the tattoos! that artist is pretty good :O
ReplyDeleteand you know there's always this joke about how some people get tattoos in a foreign language, and the artist plays punk on them by tattooing the characters upside down or deliberately mis-spelt XD at least yours isn't hwa hwa hwa!
i should go touch-up mine too, but i've found that as i soften over the years, my threshold for pain has diminished somewhat too :(
Thanks guys!! Hey, more tattooed peeps coming out of the woodwork :-D!! I'd love to see everyones!!
ReplyDeleteKim, it is rather painful, but can be more or less so depending on where you get it done. I think the ribcage area is supposed to be kind of gnarly!
Thanks Lori! As much as I love ethnic food, I also love a good old American breakfast ;-).
Grace, I want to see yours! YES, they are addictive, totally. I mean, I would never venture into Kat Von D. territory (on the show LA Ink), but you do start thinking hmmm...what can I get next?? The one on my right shoulderblade would be kind of a classic one- I was thinking a cross with red roses and the dates of my dad's life. I am not really religious, but I like the imagery. Maybe no cross? Gah, I'd better decide quick!!! That's funny about "egodad", lol!! He was the kindest, funniest, most generous person...who also had a healthy ego :-D! I mean, he was always "well maintained". Tanning salon, manicures....plus I used to give him pedicures, haha!!! I once shaved off all the hair from his feet and he started liking it so I did that every week.
Cindy, show me!! And yes, I have heard that about the Asian writing!! We went to an old man in Chinatown San Francisco and had him translate. Oh man, I was gripping that table. It was an akward postion too, on my side, balancing on my hip.
LOL! Cool!! Although I always find it a little funny that people tattoo Chinese words. It's kind of like me tattooing the word "PISCES". Then again, the Chinese characters are beautiful and I do take my culture for granted a lot!
ReplyDeleteKiva, you went through all that pain and there were no colours? If yours is blah, mine is totally anti-climatic! But I will post it as a form of miniature art on my other blog.
I hope Grace and Cindy will post theirs too ! Will be so fun to see everyone's tatts.
Very tasteful Kiva ... I know you really worry about being tasteful ... ROFLMAO
ReplyDeleteThe inside of your forearm is a very painful place to get inked ... and anywhere that is close to bones.
Tom
Could have been your mini food. I wouldn't have doubted:) Great tattoo also. Only names I would write on my skin would have to be my children I think..lol very "Brangelina" like though;)
ReplyDeleteROFL!!!!!!!!!!! Hey Tom, you know I wouldn't mind throwing a couple skulls or something in the mix....but I won't ;-). I can imagine the inside of your forearm would be very sensitive, yes! Or inner thigh?? And yet, there are women that get permanent tattooed makeup (like eyeliner)...YOW!!
ReplyDeleteAwww Christel, thank you!!! I WISH!!
ReplyDeleteThat Brangelina comment cracked me up! Brad Pitt has a strange, cryptic one on his lower back, which no one can figure out. No doubt, Angelina's influence ;-)!
LOL!!! Susan, yes, the characters are gorgeous...me like!! I am going in for color on monday- for the butterfly and my back piece. I am like a lamb going to slaughter at this poiht!!! Ok, I'm going to go check out your tat!!
ReplyDelete"YES, they are addictive, totally. I mean, I would never venture into Kat Von D. territory (on the show LA Ink), but you do start thinking hmmm...what can I get next??"
ReplyDeleteI watch that show sometimes! The friend who did my tattoo (when he was just starting out) had one around his ankle that he started expanding, it was going up his leg to his knee the last time I saw him. Then a few years later I went back to get him to touch some things up, and I asked him how far his leg tattoo had grown - and he pulled up his sleeve! Between his own work and other artists', it had grown all the way up his leg, up his back, over his shoulder, and down his arm. Don't think I'd ever go that far! It definitely hurts more to get it done right over bone, although some fleshy areas are supposed to be really painful - a friend's mom once told me DON'T ever get one on your rear, women always think that's cute but apparently there are a lot of nerve endings there!
I'll have to get a picture of mine one of these days. I designed it myself, spent about a year working on it before I got it done (at the age of 19 - wanted to be REAL sure I'd still like it when I'm 80!) It incorporates aspects of my family tree, basically - a griffin/gryphon, some Irish knotwork and other old Celtic designs, few more things. It looks vaguely heraldic, although that wasn't my intention. But since it does, I want to expand on that theme and add a heraldic "mantle," only instead of the usual folds of cloth or ribbon I want to use traditional Penobscot (Native) floral designs. One of these days...

Grace, I want to see a pic!! Your tat sounds VERY cool!! It's so true- and you did the right thing by thinking about what you REALLY wanted! That's like the first and MOST important rule about getting one. Make damned sure you can live with it for the rest of your life!
ReplyDeleteThe guy who did my last one said he left it "open" so I could expand on it if I ever wanted to. I don't believe I ever will, though, lol!! I'm with you- I don't want something snaking up my entire left leg :-O!
The thing about Kat Von D. that blows my mind is the fact that she has an area on her body that she considers "free rein"!! She will let any one of her friends, especially NON tattoo artists, pick up the gun and tattoo her! I mean, including the nutcase, drugged out guy from "Jackass"!??
That's pretty hard core, lol!
